Ok Ladiesso everyone knows about hair extensions and their purpose in giving women all over the world the hair they’ve always dreamed of growing themselves. From the glamorous Hollywood Red Carpet locks to helping cancer patients grow out their hair, hair extensions have left quite the impression. There are numerous methods available that have been designed to meet everyone’s specific hair needs and expectations but a lot of women and even STYLISTS do not have the proper education on the difference and suitably of bonds and attachments.Bonds/attachments are what you will see when you section the crown of the hair up and take a look under the hood. They are what bonds the hair extension to the natural hair.
They range from keratin protein, glue, beads, copper bonds, aluminum bonds, copper aluminum blend bonds, tape, keratin tubes, metal links, etc. How on earth do you determine what is the right method for you?First and foremost, the hardest part of this equation is finding a well rounded and educated hair extensions operator. I USED to be the stylists that only practiced one method of application and thought that would be acceptable for all my clients that wanted a full head lengthening service or added volume and density. That was my first mistake when I was an amateur stylist and the mistake most hair extensions operators are still making today. There is no bond/ attachment that is suitable for all hair types just like there are no one pair of jeans where ‘one size fits all.’Bonds/attachments and their correlating pre-bonded extensions need to be suitable for the density of the hair strand they are being attached too. Think of your hair as a foundation.
If the hair is not strong enough to support what is being built onto it, it will snap off and break. MOST hair extension lines DO NOT offer the stylist the ability to cut down a bond so it is the appropriate density of the piece it is being attached to. Hair Extension companies then promote these lines to be “Damage Free” and “Great for All Hair Types,” making any stylist comfortable to attach a hair extension the size of a shoelace to just a few pieces of hair. This is the root of all problems relating to breakache, damage, permanent hair loss, etc.
This is also why it is EXTREMELY important that you trust your hair extensions operator has a full understanding and knowledge behind the products they are using to know if your hair is the appropriate density for an extension line that DOES NOT offer them the ability to cut down a bond.Don’t get me wrong, Hair Extensions are heaven sent; a true break through in the beauty industry IF done correctly. Every extension line has its pro’s and con’s and is it crucial to know what type is suitable for what hair. Let’s get to the nitty gritty!Great Lengths Hair Extensions! The ‘Rolls Royce’ of Hair Extensions. If you can afford Great Lengths, these should be your first choice. The company consistently wins Stylists Choice ‘Best Hair Extensions’ every yearneed I say more? Not only is the quality of the hair unbeatable, they are the most comfortable extension I have personally ever worn. Great Lengths are attached with a keratin protein bond that is softened around the hair using the 3500 Thermal method or The 5000 Cold Fusion Method.
I use both but tend to gravitate towards the Cold Fusion method which uses no heat whatsoever, making these the least invasive ‘fusion’ method on the market. The ultrasonic vibrations soften the keratin, spreading it across the natural hair before it is molded into a round or square bond using the fingertips. The bonds are customizable to match any hair density and can accommodate the finest hair if densities are matched accordingly. A round bond can be used on all hair types in Standard, Fine, Extra Fine and Custom Bonds.
Square bonds are used on hair types that can handle a Standard size bond, but enables the stylist to cover more of the head without a ‘rope’ or ‘stringy’ effect. Square bonds are not recommended on fine hair types.Great Lengths take about 3-4 hours to apply depending on how many bundles are needed to complete the look.
These extensions can be worn for 3 1/2-5 months with NO adjustments needed in between that time! These extensions are most definitely the priciest upfront but due to them requiring no maintenance, they can equal out financially in comparison to re-usable extensions.‘Link’ Hair ExtensionsshrinkLINKS Hair Extensions are my favorite ‘link’ extension.
ShrinkLINKS Hair Extensions use small, transparent tubes made of a hi-tech polymer. The shrinkLINK is threaded onto your natural hair using a shrinkLINKS applicator hook and the pre-bonded hair extension is then placed inside the tube along with your natural hair. A specially designed Mark Barrington Concepts iron is wrapped around the shrinkLINKS so the heat can release a polymer sealant to complete the attachment. The shrinkLINKS themselves are lined with a light coating of Keratin, creating a water- tight seal with no slipping. This is a patented, one-of-a-kind hair extension bond requiring absolutely no glue!Dream Catchers Hair Extensions are another wonderful method if you are the type that prefers a beaded hair extension bond. The beads are made of a copper aluminum blend and are crimped into the hair using pliers. The hair extensions themselves are real human hair and are sourced from India and Europe.
The bonds are not customizable but the line offers Full Points and Half Points to accommodate fine and medium hair types. Whenever you have a reusable hair extension such as Dream Catchers or shrinkLINKES- maintenance is required about every 6-8 weeks.
You will need to plan on scheduling regular adjustments with your stylist to get these babies moved up on your head once you have a root. IF your wallet cannot accommodate for the maintenance that these extensions require, pushing out adjustments to save money will only cause damage to your natural hair!Tape Hair Extensions! The lowest price point extension on the market! They are great for my clients that are interested in dipping their toe in the pool in regards to adding hair without investing twice as much for a more commitment required hair extension remedy. Tape extensions are fabulous for events such as weddings, holiday parties, etc. You can re-use the extensions up to three times and you are not required to put them back in at each adjustment. Adjustments every 6-8 weeks ARE required to avoid damage to the natural hair.I have used tape extensions to help my clients grow their hair back after enduring damage from other hair extensions and they have experienced noticeable hair growth since.
There ARE a lot more necessary pre-cautions that need to be taken with these extensions though so listen up!BECAUSE the bonds are wider, application is crucial and so is incorporating enough natural hair into the ‘hair sandwich’ so the entire unit isn’t pulled out when styling or brushing. I have done corrective work with these because the extension was too heavy for the amount of natural hair that was in the bond. This has caused entire extensions to come out WITH the natural hair, making that baby fine, cotton candy like hair not ideal for these extensions. Curly hair is also a toss up depending on how tight the curl pattern is. If its angry curl, they will kick the top extension off and cause separation as the hair grows, creating a very disappointed client and frustrated stylist! Overall tape extensions have become very popular very quickly for a reason!Cheers to beautiful hair!Lauren Mae HaggardThe Hair Extensions Expert.
